Liebster Award and a Brief Update

I have sadly neglected my blog as well as writing, though I often write at school, but it is generally to help demonstrate assignments to students. Hopefully, I will not be too rusty. I did have some time a few months ago to work on a seemingly never-ending short story, and the end is in sight. I am looking forward to completing my first year of teaching as well as returning next year. I am also looking forward to becoming a full-time father, husband, and writer for the summer (though there will be some teacher related stuff that I have to make room for). I am planning on keeping my blog updated about what I am reading, what I am writing, and what I am listening to. Liz was awarded this Liebster Award which isn't really an award, but a prompt to re-energize blogs. She posted her response at our other blog, In My Life. I do have to thank her for a jump start into summer. I think now is as good a time as any to shake of the dust and prepare myself for writing daily during the summer. I am putting mine right here, though expect a post from me to be appearing soon at our other blog. Here is the basic gist of the "Liebster Award:"

1. Thank the person who nominated you and link your post to their blog.
2. List 11 facts about yourself then answer the 11 questions given to you.
3. Create 11 more questions for your nominees, all of whom have 200 or less followers.
4. Comment on their blogs to inform them of their Liebster Award nomination

11 Facts about Me (that you may or may not know)
1. I am color-blind. Well, the technical term is color-deficient. My brain cannot easily differentiate between red and green and any color that contains red and green (for example, blue and purple; and red, green, and brown). It is, however, a pet peeve of mine for people to play the what color is this game once they find out. Really, it is a serious waste of time. I am not going to suddenly start seeing colors correctly because of a silly game where I attempt to decipher colors.
2.  I was a college DJ. I have written about this many times on my blog, but I have some new friends on facebook now. It sounds rather glamourous, but it was at the school's non-top 40 station, KANM. No one listened. Trust me, I mean NO ONE.
3. I grew up with dachshunds, hence the fact that I have two today. We had two as I grew up at home, Crackers, who we had from when I was very small until I was 13, and Rascal, who I think my parents got when I was 17 or 18, but still at home, and they still have him today.
4. My all-time favorite video game is Lunar: The Silver Star, which was originally on the Sega CD console, which is where I first played it. Before this point, I really didn't understand that there were video games out there that told fantastical stories. These video games were the RPGs of the 90's. It was Lunar that turned me on to the Final Fantasy, Shining Force, and Phatasy Star serieses that kept me reading when I wasn't even all that in to books. Lunar itself had a sequel and the original Silver Star game has been put out in several iterations. Check it out if you like menu-based RPGs.
5.  My favorite television series of all time is The Wonder Years. I still love the show to this day and am overjoyed that it finally made its way to Amazon and Netflix, though a little bit of the music has been changed due to licensing rights.
6. I wasn't all that into reading in middle school and high school. I know this seems like blasphemy for an English teacher/aspiring writer, but it is sadly true. During my first year of college as an engineering major, I began reading. I realized that I really hated my engineering classes and was driven to the drastic switch to a creative writing major. The book that changed everything for me was Catcher In the Rye.
7.  Liz and I record Jeopardy! every day and watch it after we get home. It is a great stress-relief and something that I look forward to every day. Earlier this year, I took the Jeopardy! online contestant test. I failed miserably, I am sure. It was much harder than I'd expected. Performing with the clock ticking down each question was difficult and put a lot of pressure on me. I am sure that I will be taking it again. Eventually maybe I will have the knowledge and composure under pressure to do better.
8. I would be a 4th or 5th generation Texan if I weren't born in Kansas. That's right, I am a native Kansan, though only born about three hours from Amarillo. I still have a soft spot for Kansas, as I would often return to visit family that still lived there. Liz and I often make the trip north to see my grandparents that still live there. It is a very comforting place.
9. Despite my love of the arts and my embrace of many counter-cultural things, I love to watch A&M football. I generally don't drink the Kool-Aid, but I must have gotten a little of the maroon flavor in my four years in College Station. I become emotionally invested intthe football team each year, usually to my chagrin. Hopefully this past season wasn't a fluke and the team will cause me far less stress.
10. Since my mind is still on sports, I collected baseball cards as a child. I am not talking a small collection here. I still have all of my baseball cards. They are all in the attic. The number has to be somewhere in the five-digit range. My favorite players growing up were Nolan Ryan, Juan Gonzales, and Ivan Rodriguez. Yes, Texas Rangers all three. I should probably look into making a little money back off of all the investment I put into those cards.
11. I have trouble not correcting people. When I see or hear something that I think is incorrect, I just can't help myself. As a matter of fact, I corrected one of Liz's questions that she left for me below. See if you can find it. Honestly, it is something that I am constantly working on. I know it can be annoying.

Questions given to me to answer from Liz
1.What is your favorite book series? Why?
2. If you could be anywhere else right now, what place would you choose?
3. What was your favorite book when you were in elementary school?
4. Who is your hero?
5. If you could have a super power, which power would you choose?
6. What single music album has had the most profound effect on your life?
7. What movie had the most emotional resonance with you after viewing?
8. What's one thing on your bucket list?
9. Favorite sitcom of all time?
10. What is your biggest pet peeve? What really irks you?
11. What do you like most about yourself?

1. My favorite series is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It is the ultimate, and I mean the ultimate tale of good vs. evil, and each sci-fi and fantasy series that I have read since steals some idea or concept from this series. Tolkien, through this series, created a blueprint on how to create a series and a complete other world.
2. I would choose to be in London. It is my favorite place that I have ever been. Maybe someday, we will be able to take long vacations to other places during the summer. Places where we can emerge ourselves into the culture and I can write.
3. This is tough for me. I really enjoyed The Boxcar Children and Hank the Cowdog books a lot, but I think that my favorite is probably A Wrinkle in Time. It should have been an early indicator that I would go on to love sci-fi and fantasy.
4. I have many heroes, but the one that probably impacted me the most growing up was my mother. My mother taught me how to be kind to everyone. She showed me how from her words and actions. Now, treat people better than I am treated is kind of my mantra.
5. I would choose the power to fly, Superman-style. It would alleviate a lot of my travel woes. I could go wherever I wanted in the world and quickly. It also does help that Superman is my favorite superhero.
6. This is a really tough question for me, but I would probably say that Jimmy Eat World's 1999 album Clarity had the most profound effect. I discovered this album during my first year in college when I was really immersed into a lot of new music. It was this album that lead me to see artistry in music like never before and I often hold other albums up to the overall quality of Clarity. Whether this is my favorite album these days is up for debate, but it still definitely scores in my top ten.
7. The movie that had the most emotional resonance with me after viewing it is Almost Famous. It wasn't the type of movie that left me in tears or in roars of laughter, but it resonated with me on an inspirational level, partially because of the movie's story itself, but I also really connected with the character William, played by Patrick Fugit. It was at this point in my life that writing was something exciting to me for the first time. Any time I watch this movie, it is inspirational. Such a powerful story and such powerful characters. It also combines two things I love: writing and music.
8. I have yet to make an actual bucket list, but one thing that would definitely be on it would be to record a full-length album. I hope that I become a good enough song writer to feel like I should at least record 10 or 12 songs, even at home, and then make them somehow available to some kind of audience. I am nowhere near that level right now.
9. First off, let me state that I don't consider The Wonder Years a sitcom. My favorite all-time is still in production. It is How I Met Your Mother. This was a series that Liz and I started watching during our first year of marriage because we liked Jason Segal and Alyson Hannigan. It has been hilarious and I could almost talk about this series in conjunction with my marriage. I will be sad next year when it is over. I love the way this sitcom refers to past events in the show constantly, and that only a true fan would understand these references.
10. I spoke of the "What color is this?" Game above. That would probably be it. It is the thing that irks me the most.
11. I like that I am super self-deprecating. But seriously, I like that I can look at myself in the mirror. That I am a decent human-being with good intentions toward others. I don't claim anything like perfection and there are certainly times in my life, when I could say the opposite was and still is true, but today, I am striving for this on a daily basis. I get lots of help from God and those around me.

The questions for my nominee(s):
1. What is your name?
2. What is your quest?
3. What is your favorite color?
4. What is your favorite video game or video game series of all time?
5. What is your guilty pleasure to watch on TV?
6. What is your favorite guilty pleasure movie?
7. What single music album has had the most profound effect on your life? (kept it on from Liz)
8. What is the favorite place that you have ever traveled? Why?
9. What is your favorite non-fiction book?
10.  If you could play any musical instrument in the world, what would it be?

Now for my nominees- Jeremy was already nominate by Liz, so instead of burdening him with another, I will keep to one nominee. It has been a while since I have see Lauren post anything, so that is my nominee.
