Album #97

Top 100 Albums FAQ

97. Let's Face It by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Island/Mercury, 1997)

This album brought ska-core to the public, for it's very brief moment in the limelight. What I love most about this record, is that, in high school, I had friends with varying musical interests, but everyone seemed to like this album, whether fans of metal, classic rock, top 40, or punk.

My favorites on the album include "Another Drinkin' Song," "Numbered Days," and "1-2-8." Of course, "The Impression That I Get" is a good song, but I believe the three I listed are even better. It's not hard to find ska records with really bad lyrics, but the Bosstones are actually impressive: tackling serious issues like violence and alcoholism.

Some might consider this album a guilty pleasure, but not me. It finds regular rotation into my CD listening in my car. The songs are so catchy and sing-a-long. The album comes to a great conclusion with "1-2-8." The verses hit hard climaxing to a chorus that surprises you by dropping the distorted guitar and going with the traditional ska upbeats.

I think that this will be an album that I will listen to for a long time and that the kids I will have someday will probably find really strange when they get old enough to realize those kinds of things. It may have been a passing fad, but it still holds a place close to my heart.
