Album #94

Top 100 Albums FAQ

94. Ghosts by Sleeping at Last (Interscope Records, 2003)

I have fallen a little behind on my countdown, but hopefully I will be able to write more in the upcoming days and weeks.

For me Ghosts displays great range from upbeat songs, to desperation songs, to mysterious and ephemeral songs. The overall tone of the album is certainly mellow, but the gem of the album, "Currents," certainly gets me singing along every time.

As I often point out, starting an album is important. Sleeping at Last does not disappoint: "Say," "Currents" and "All That is Beautiful" are some of the best tracks on the album. Another one of my favorites is "Slowly, Now." The song just escalates to a wonderfully explosive chorus.

The album closes well with "Trees (Hallway of Leaves)," which is a good last song, but I think that maybe "Slowly, Now" could have been a better choice.

Sleeping at Last put out a great album lyrically. The lyrics are filled with allegorical imagery and honest introspection that most bands and artists are not capable of. Some of the songs that I have not yet mentioned sit perched on the edge of greatness-- it just seems they lack a little touch that I can't put my finger on to put all the songs on the level of my favorites. This album is one that continually finds itself in my listening rotation, and I have no doubt that it will continue to do so.
