90. Fallen Star Collection by Brandtson (Deep Elm Records, 1999)
I haven't given up on doing my countdown, just got a little busy is all. Brandtson is a band that I really didn't understand the big hub-bub about when they started, but over the years, I have grown to love Fallen Star Collection. I think the guitar parts are great and have always enjoyed the vocals of Myk and Jared, especially when one is singing a counter-chorus to the other. This album has its fair share of counter-choruses. Also, for some reason, the lyrics to this album seem more pertinent to me today than they did when I first heard the album. Maybe it was because I just wasn't mature enough to understand yet. Maybe it was because I hadn't yet experienced losing that summer love that Brandtson seems to have so much experience with.
The album starts out with a zinger in "As You Wish," which is great not just because of its Princess Bride reference. The song builds into a big chorus that gets the album rolling along nicely. Another favorite of mine is "Potential Getaway Driver," which is also a great song as well as being a great movie reference (Bottle Rocket). Perennial fan favorite "Summer in St. Claire" is most people's favorite track on the album (I am assuming), and it deserves the hype. It is by far the catchiest song on the album, and was probably my favorite song on the album for the year of 2000, but things slowly evolved, and the true jewel of the album to me is "Probably Nothing." The guitar part makes the song. The lyrics are great (as are all the lyrics on the album).
I find as I mature that I love this album more and more. Had I made this countdown two years ago, Fallen Star Collection would not have made the list. The album probably has the record of the album that grew on me the slowest. I think this will end up being its peak position on this and future countdowns, but I have been wrong about these things before.
