92. Demons by Liars Academy (Equal Vision Records, 2004)
For me, Liars Academy comes in somewhere between Cross My Heart and Samiam. On Demons, they sometimes still release the raw power that was Cross My Heart (where most of the band members came from), but it is combined with the pop sensibilities of bands like Samiam and Lifetime. I think that this is a great album to introduce someone to, as it is really accessible. It's probably a good way for most to get into Cross My Heart.
One problem that I have with the album is that I can rarely remember song titles because the titles make no sense to me. It isn't a big deal, but it makes it a little harder to talk about. I think it is also because there isn't a bad track on the album and all the songs are so cohesive.
The album starts out with a bang with "Microtron" (which might be the best song on the album) and "Dying As Fast As I Can." Liars Academy displays their range by slowing it down and going acoustic on "Breathing," which is a nice break falling right in the middle of the album. "Breathing" leads right in to my favorite track on the album, "Saturday Night," which is probably the catchiest song on the record. The record just plunges ahead at a nice steady pace. "More Than Ready" is a great next to last track for any album and transitions nicely to "Washing Machine."
The time I saw Liars Academy live, I heard that they sometimes play old Cross My Heart material, and I had my fingers crossed. They didn't appease me, but I was very impressed with their music, so impressed that that I purchased Demons shortly after its release in 2004.
